LARPing

LARP is a live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically act out their characters' actions. Beyond that it can mean more or less depending on the person you ask. I took the opportunity to ask some LARPers what they felt LARPing meant, they did a much better job of explaining how varied and fun LARPing can be. Their answers are below.

“LARP is a Live-Action Roleplaying Game, where you create a character in a dynamic world with many other characters. You decide on your character's costume, mannerisms, and personality and portray them to the other players like an actor in a TV show or a movie. Your character has their own goals, motivations, and capabilities that change over time depending on their actions and interactions with other characters and with the world.”

–Akira, excellent LARPer

“Live-Action RolePlaying (LARP) is a chance to tell a collective story with your friends. To an outside observer it may look like a group of people dressed eccentrically and playing rock-paper-scissor with one another.

But LARPing is so much more.

It is an opportunity to, for a few hours a week, live another life. You become the character you make, taking on their clothes and mannerisms, and your friends become theirs. You sieze the chance to be something different from your daily routine, to look upon the world with a new perspective, and to imagine affecting your surroundings in ways impossible in real life. LARPing is stepping outside of oneself for a night and existing as pure potential in a world of endless possibilities.

What would YOU do with that potential?”

–Brad, superb LARPer

“Do you like Halloween and costume parties? Do you play video games and think "why can't I hack that computer? Why can't I hide in this spot and set an ambush? Why can't I just continue after the guard saw me?" Do you ever watch shows like the West Wing, Scandal, or similar and want to shape politics and plots like that? Do you watch Supernatural, Buffy, or Warehouse 13 and want to deal with mysterious items and creatures?

All that and more is a few bucks away. Talk with the Storytellers and bounce ideas off them, they'll help fit the world around you and you into the world. Do you want to work with your friends? Do you want to work around them? Do you want to work against them? Come talk to any player or staff, we have lots of stories and would really enjoy you being part of the next one we tell.”

–Andrew, marvelous LARPer
